Well it’s about two in the morning and it seems I have developed a mild case of insomnia. We had two more weddings this weekend. Friday brought us the the beautiful community of Norman’s Cove – the people we’re so nice and welcoming that I wanted to stay. When you spend an entire day playing shadow with a family you feel you get to know them fairly quickly. Maybe I’m going crazy but I pretty much balled during the toast to the bride.
Saturday was great as well – we got to shoot at one of our favorites, Corpus Christi, then on to Bowring Park for group pictures. Now, as I’ve said before, if you’ve ever been to Bowring Park on a sunny summer Friday or Saturday, you know that there is going to be at least five wedding parties present during any one time of the afternoon. The park is fully open to the public and it works on a first come first serve basis.
On Saturday, Jennifer and I were the first to arrive at this particular spot. We set up as usual to start our group shots, then along comes another photographer, an old schooler, who sets up almost on top of the tiny space we are already using. Now for those of you not familiar, Bowring Park must be somewhere between 50 to 100 acres, with at least ten good spots for pictures. Ah well.
So we’re working happily side-by-side, when he decides to shoot under a tree off to the side and in the back of our shots. Not a problem – in my group I have this one step forward, that one back, I move to the right a few steps – assistant moves the light – on with the show – click click. Next, an old car comes along, turns off the road, and drives right up amongst the tress and onto the lawn. Wow – pretty bold – he starts posing the group around that. Now our couple had a horse and carriage rented for the afternoon. During an attempt to get a group shot around the horse, poor Mr. Ed decides to continue walking closer and closer to the second bridal party. We re-construct the shot and try again – and the stress builds.
During all this, we have apparently crept into his shot. So he‘ll also move a little perhaps? Rotate, as I did? Take a step to the left surely? Not quite. He calls out that we’re in his shot, and while clearly being able to see that we are dealing with a difficult situation and a party of almost 20 lifeforms, within a minute, is yelling savagely. Nice.
So at this point, he’s managed to piss me off, but more importantly, has ruined the mood of both his own party and ours. And that, in the end, is everything that is acomplished by this sort of exchange. The really funny bit is I don’t think any of us got the perfect shot.
Anyway, I’m glad to say the rest of the day went beautifully – we headed to Quidi Vidi for the couple pics. I also want to add that the groom (Stephen) was very sweet – I’m sure I was introduced to everyone in the family again making me feel very much at home. Thanks to Stephen and Jennifer for being so warm and friendly.
