A few pictures from Hawaii

A shot from the last wedding in Fermeuse.

These two little girls, daughters of the couple, were bundles of energy during the first half of the day. There was a tense moment outside the church, just as the bridal party was to enter when one of them seen a familiar face and bolted away from the rest of the girls. It’s moments like this that keep things interesting and often give you something to look back on and smile.
So we’ve now officially reached the end of the wedding season. In a few days we’ll be getting away to take a few weeks off. There’s a few projects we’ll be planning and perhaps will be arranging some modeling shoots for fun when we get back. Not that every visitor here doesn’t enjoy all these pictures of blissful, beautiful people getting married, but I’m thinking that we need some non-wedding content here soon!

Carla and Alix were a great couple to photograph - they were relaxed and truly enjoyed the day and it can be seen in the photos. We tried some new techniques with lighting that really paid off - it’s already part of the regular routine. :)
It’s getting late, so I’ll have the other one done tomorrow.

A shot from the baby shoot we did on Monday.

Molly was only six days old, but already she was trying to hold her head up and her eyes were focusing on people and following them around the room. I was amazed at how alert (and loud) she was!
I’m uploading some Photo Sites as I type, so there’ll be links to those on here in a bit.

So we did a shoot earlier this week with Amiee Power, the newly crowned Miss Newfoundland and Labrador 2006 / 2007.

We shot her in-studio to get started, then went on to the Winterholme Heritage Inn. She did a great job - very comfortable in front of the camera. I look forward to working with her again.

I’d like to specifically thank the owners of the Winterholme for use of their facilitites for this shoot. This is perhaps the most historically beautiful building in town, and is more like something seen in Europe than in North America. For those looking for a location for indoor wedding pictures, the Winterholme can accomodate small groups up to about a dozen people. We’ve shot there many times this summer alone, and I can honestly say that, besides being a beautiful place to stay, you really couldn’t select a better place for wedding photos.

We’re working on three weddings right now and will have a few new Photo Sites online within the next few days.

This has been one of our busiest weekends this year, despite the fact that we’re near the end of the wedding season.
Friday’s wedding was in St. John’s - Carla and Alix were wed at the Salvation Army Church on Adams Avenue.

Saturday’s wedding was in Trinity - that one I typed about earlier last week that took place in a very old church. The atmosphere throughout the day was from another time - Trinity is a beautiful, historic little community, and as we’d go from one location to another we began to appreciate more and more the opportunity to cover Andrea and Dan’s day. Andrea had everything planned perfectly, from the location of an old inn where she prepared for the service, right down to the simple yet perfect fiddle music that accented the service and reception.

After attending so many weddings this year, we’ve been coming up with tips for planning - a list of do’s and don’ts for your wedding day if you will.
For example, autumn weddings - the colours are so nice. However, this is a particularly good idea if you’re not in the city. As we drove out to Trinity on Saturday, we noticed how the landscape changed along the way. Currently, the leaves are starting to turn colour in St. John’s, but they’re further along once you leave the Avalon Peninsula. And of course, as anyone who has driven the Trans Canada out of St. John’s will tell you, there are more deciduous trees once you hit Clarenville, which makes things more interesting and colourful. Another good tip for a fall wedding in Newfoundland - shawls.
I’ll post more later. We had a modeling shoot yesterday, will be shooting the newly crowned Miss Newfoundland and Labrador today, and then will be photographing a newborn infant this evening.

A few pictures from a wedding that we covered this past Saturday.

Mark and Esther’s ceremony was held at St. Pius X Church on Smithville Crescent in St. John’s. I’d not shot in this church before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. The light is good front / centre, but the rest of the church required studio lights. The altar is nicely lit from above and is accessible from behind, which allowed me to get some truly candid stuff.

Again, the couple was really nice. The guys in particular were very inquisitive when it came to our gear - when they were not in a shot, they were sizing up and asking questions about the cameras or lights or whatever. Even though we had to do a good few posed shots, we were still able to fade away and document the day. It was just six hours coverage from start to finish, but I think Jennifer and I were still able to capture the mood of the event. I’ll post more shots from that one later.
Speaking of mood, we’ve got an interesting one coming up - we’ll be covering a wedding that will be taking place in a tiny little church in an outport community. We meet with the couple again a few weeks ago - apparently the place is ancient - it doesn’t even have electricity.

We did a modeling-style shoot today for a contestant of the Miss Teen Newfoundland Pageant.
I’m looking forward to having more time for modeling shoots in the upcoming weeks and months. I ran into one of the girls we’ve shot before and, upon reviewing her pictures again, decided that she did an excellent job but I was a little unhappy with some of the technical aspects of my work. Lucky for me, she’s up for another shoot, so we’ll come up with a new concept and give it another go in a month or two.
I’m also thinking about calling a brief moratorium on studio shoots. We’ve been a little too heavy on them lately and they’re sorta getting boring. They also tend to rely too heavily on the subject and present less of a challenge for the photographer. I’m thinking the next few will be on location for awhile.
