The Angela Haunt

Published by Kim under Modeling

This post contains video. Download QuickTime for Windows or Mac.

Here is the rest of that Angela Goth inspired shoot from a few days ago.

It’s a bit of a different way to display them - you’ll need QuickTime, which you’ll probably use elsewhere on the web anyway.

Courtesy of my brand spanking new Mac (and several thousand dollars spent on music school while in university) I was able to compose 1 minute and 43 seconds of music for this video. I tried to “creep it up” a bit for the occasion.

And just to stick to my “picture a day” thing (which I’ve started in secrecy, to make it seem less like work), here’s a shot from one of the last few weddings of the season.

Boo! MuaHA-HA-HA!

(Please don’t) smile for the camera

Published by Kim under Weddings

When covering a wedding in a true “photojournalistic” style, it can be difficult to get everyone to play along. Or more accurately, to even understand what I’m there to do.

For example, when we show up at the bride or groom’s house at the beginning of the day, we are sometimes inadvertently limited in what we can capture. This most often happens when a family member freaks out for one reason or another - “Oh my gawd, this place is a mess, and the Photographers Are Here!” Hey mom! That mess in the brides’ room is part of the real wedding day - please let us photograph it!

That’s why receptions are generally a better time to get candid shots. The guests are relaxed and ready to have fun, and those participants tend to be more understanding of our “roaming” style of coverage.

These are not typical shots from a wedding. They’re more like outtakes, and frankly, it’s the style of work that I like to do.

Good golly, it’s Molly

Published by Kim under Family

I took these pictures on Molly’s first birthday, but it’s been so long since I’ve actually had a chance to work on them I’m expecting an invitation to her second any day now. Sorry guys.

Molly at 1 year

Like I said the other day, I’m finally getting a chance to work on the backlog. I noticed something again during my shoot with Molly - having worked at a family studio for 40 hours a week for 6 years straight really comes in handy. This is especially true in those moments when you have to quickly capture the attention of a baby.

Often, to my own personal embarrassment, I would have to put things on my head, burst into a silly song, roll my tongue, puff my cheeks and cross my eyes while shooting kids (well, sometimes even when shooting adults, but that’s another story). Occasionally, that would scare a child, so I learned the hard way to get a feel for each personality before ranting like a looonatic. Some children just prefer a soft smile - they may just be afraid of the camera, so I’d take it down for a few seconds to make eye contact. Apparently my bulbous round melon is quite amusing as well.

So as I shot these pictures of Little Miss Molly I was reminded not only of long forgotten skills - I also recalled how fast a baby can move, how they put everything in their mouths and the excitement and bewilderment that creeps across their face when they see the flash fire. It brings a question, with a finger pointed… “dat?”

Death becomes her

Published by Kim under Modeling

This is from a TFP that we did today. We’d been planning this one for awhile in co-operation with a new photographer I’ve been shooting with, Amanda.

Ok Angela, less sexy, more scary

She had an idea for a goth shoot, and I don’t think we could have found a model to do a better job than Angela. I shot her just once before, but I knew I’d be calling her again when the perfect project came along. We actually looked at quite a few samples while discussing a look and general direction for this one, and I’m glad to say that, as far as the model is concerned, she topped everything that we seen.

We couldn’t get our regular hair / makeup artist for this one, so it ended up being a DIY. I think I did a pretty good job, especially for someone who hasn’t really worn makeup in 10 years. I must admit however, only some of it was done in person - it’s a bit of a virtual job courtesy of Photo Shop - I apply those skills every day.

I’ve got a bit of a backlog in terms of editing, so I won’t be getting to this one for a few days. I’m still gonna try to have the whole thing online here before Halloween.

Three’s Company

Published by Kim under Modeling

It’s hard to get a pose in edge wise with triplets on the set.

Craft Council Stuff

Sabrina smiled graciously though, as the “Kelly Trio” and their varied personalities huddled in. The room is painfully small.

Check the next issue of The Current for more pics from this shoot.

The haunted stump

Published by Kim under Newfoundland

This is my official announcement that I’m considering an announcement that I’ll be doing a new picture every day for two weeks.

I’ve actually been testing the idea, sorta seeing what will be involved if I do it. Some people have done a new picture every day for a year. I’m not that bored yet.

Rennies River Trail

Anyway, as a result, I got those few shots down at the start of the Rennies River Trail the day before yesterday. As you can see there on the right, there’s one creepy ass stump up by the tennis courts.

Little Devil vs. Larry

Published by Kim under Family

So we have a cat. He’s a bit of a bugger. He had a name, but now he’s most often know as “Little Devil” and, depending on the situation, “you’re some bad!”.

At 15lbs, our “little” fella is not really that little. He’s beautiful though, with luxurious long black fur.

The problem is, he has sort of a devious temperament. He likes to be chased around the house, and will do pretty much whatever it takes to get a chase on the go. Often, soon after greeting you with a rub of his head, he’ll playfully give you a quick bite and take off - so whenever he comes by, you just naturally “tense up”. We tried to break him of this behavior early on, but now, to him, the spray bottle is little more than a joke. It’s an especially terrifying time when you get ready to turn in for the night - as soon as the lights go out, you have to just run and jump for the bed. An attack could come from God Knows Where.

So this has given us a bad impression of cats in general. That’s why it felt so odd when Larry first showed up.

Larry is also a black cat. I should say that Larry was originally know as Linda, but after an awkward situation shared between us, his correct sex was determined. But being a black cat is where the similarities to Little Devil end.

Larry has been coming around for several months now, but more often in the last few weeks. He’s visited us every day for a snack in the morning then sometimes again in the evening - often staying the whole night. When he first started showing up he was in bad shape - his fur was matted, he smelled and was quite jumpy and distrustful of humans. But he warmed up before long. Now he’ll walk along with us when we come home and will follow us into the house as far as the porch - his usual sleeping place.

He’s also looking much more healthy now, and we’ve realized that he absolutely loves anyone who will offer a good belly rub. He’s not really big on being picked up (looses patience with it after a few minutes and starts wiggling), but as soon as I sit down outside, he comes right over and invites himself into my lap - on his own, he’ll stay there for as long as I’ll allow.

To me though, the oddest thing about Larry is that he’s never bitten or clawed either of us - not even once.

So our Little Devil is not too impressed with his presence. As I said, we often invite Larry in as far as our porch, especially on cold nights. Out Little Devil just sits there, on the opposite side of the french door, staring, seemingly scheming some sort of cat revenge. Larry finishes his snack and jumps up onto his chair for the night, ignoring the evil on the other side. When we go out in the porch to visit him before bed, he’ll roll over and purr and show his appreciation for our touching him. The Little Devil just stares, often for the whole night.

So, after several weeks of trying to introduce the two, the official cat is clearly not warming up to the unofficial one. As such, we’ve decided to start posting some pictures of Larry on here in the hopes of finding a home for him. Plus, having more then one cat ups my internal “crazy cat lady” warning system to Yellow (a colour coded scale that I’ve personally monitored for years, but seems to be suspiciously similar to that of another group).
Larry needs a home

Vital Stats.

  • Name: Larry the Cat
  • Address: Various Houses in the area
  • Weight: 10lbs
  • Age: Maybe 1 to 3 years
  • Size: Meduim
  • Hair Colour: Black
  • Sex: Male
  • Claws: Yes
  • Neutered: Don’t think so
  • Temperament: Timid but extremely friendly

Enjoys long naps, moonlight strolls and extended grooming sessions. Looking for a long term relationship and ready to settle down and warm the feet of one lucky owner from now on.

Miss NL

Published by Kim under Modeling, Newfoundland

We did a shoot a few days ago with Sabrina Jenkins, Miss Newfoundland and Labrador for 2007 - 2008. Again, it was raining most of the day, so the people at The Park House on Military Road had graciously agreed to let us shoot inside in just such a situation.

Sabrina did a great job. In fact, we’ll be using her in another shoot that we’ve already arranged for The Current. Stay tuned, that one is coming up later this week.

Rainy days and weddings

Published by Kim under Weddings

Some shots from a wedding we covered a few weeks back. It poured that whole day, as it’s pretty much been doing ever since. Better than snow though, hey?
