Kim’s Random Thoughts
Giving a cat eggnog is not such a good idea.

When I awoke this morning, I looked out my kitchen window to see a big pile of wood stacked on the side of the road – it was a little bit of the bay, right smack dab in the middle of the city.
On the way out for the day, I asked the by’s if I could photograph them loading their trucks. Ever seen those Jack Daniel’s spots that are running now on TV? That was sorta my inspiration.

…I ended up in Portugal Cove.

I actually ran into another photographer – he was freezing and had forgotten his gloves. Being so well equipped in that area (and proud of it), I offered him a spare pair that I had in the car. Perhaps through the surprise of such a generous offer from a stranger, he left quickly, all the time looking over his shoulder.
Then again, it could have been my new hat that scared him off.

It was -13 Celsius in St. John’s today. Although there was practically no wind, it was still cold enough to send us in after shooting outside for just around 10 minutes.
When I got home though, I was still wanting to take some pictures. So… here is some random crap from around the house. The light was still good inside – the living room has six windows.
The light got even better starting at about 1:00pm this afternoon. Realizing that I’ll have fewer and fewer chances to get these shots as the winter grinds on, we did what any good Newfoundlanders would – went out looking for new long johns.
I must not have been the only one shopping for thermal underwear, because the stores were practically cleaned out. At $180.00 for a full body suite by Helley Hansen, I told the minion that I’d sooner get frost bite.
I managed to find what I was looking for after awhile – I’m now very well equipped for the cold. Feeling brave, and with just a few hours of daylight to spare, I headed out again, leaving the minion home to wrap Christmas gifts.
More from that second outing tomorrow.
PS. Rayleigh Scattering is defined here.

During our last road trip, upon rounding a inlet just in time to see this, the car slid to an awkward halt and everybody jumped out frantically. I think this was Cape Broyle – the steam on the surface makes it.

While crossing the barrens of the southern Avalon we were keeping an eye out for Caribou. I’d seen them many times in the past, but never when I had a camera in hand and a desire to shoot them.

We chased the buggers a few hundred meters through the snow and never really got close enough for a good shot.

We ended up in St. Vincent’s during the road trip today. Although I’ve been in the area many times (it’s where my mother grew up, and some of her family still live there), I’ve never actually stopped in St. Peter’s, which technically I think is part of the same community, but right next door.
Da by’s had just finished up their cooked dinner when we showed up taking pictures of the old house across the street – they offered to show us around. More than a few times we’ve commented amongst ourselves on how warm and hospitable people are when the tourists (or townies) show up with their cameras. Thanks guys.

We had a few little adventures today on our excursion. You’ll be able to check out more info on these road trips on another blog actually – a new one that just went online a few days ago. Think of it as a sister blog, if you will – with pictures that are not quite as nice. -Insert Evil Laugh!-
