I’m now at a point in my life where the phrase “looking for a stud” means something entirely different than it did when I was 20.

This is the reason behind my posting of so many Shoebox entries for the last few days. My foray was primarily a role of assistant right up to the point the painting was done… then I was unleashed to decorate.

I’ve been going though an old backup that is being put “offline” and I’ve been noticing how many good shots are tossed aside when you shoot for a magazine. That’s one of the drawbacks of shooting for print publications – you can have a ton of great shots, but the person writing the story often needs a specific photo to illustrate the text. Here are a few examples, each from a different magazine, reaching back from well over a year.

In many ways, I’ve been lucky with this type of work. For example, I’ve never had any type of artistic limitation on what I can and cannot shoot. In fact, in the past, I’ve had wedding clients impose such restrictions more often than publishers. Ah, the weddings – I’ll get into that later.
Print can be difficult for a few other reasons. I’m accustom to quick results. If I get a good shot, I can post it online – never takes more than a few days from shutter to screen. Even when I shoot for a full eight or ten hours, the client has proofs within weeks. When you shoot for printed publications, it can take months before you see how your stuff was used… and perhaps even longer ’till you’re paid.
Worse than all that though is when someone totally bastardizes a photo and then promptly puts your name on it.

Seeing how nasty it was in St. John’s today, I tried a mental exercise to warm myself up.
I thought that if I pretend it was summer, perhaps I’d be able to shake this insistent chill from which I’ve been suffering these last few days.
My first idea was to get the minion to slip into a pair of speedos and smear some suntan lotion on, but I wasn’t sure anyone else would want to see that. In the end, I decided to pick up a bouquet of yummy summer flowers and whip out the macro.

I left the house today with full intentions of taking a few scenics, but the combination of cold and drowsiness kept me in the car – nodding, drooling, and finally… sleeping. Suddenly, I awoke to find myself in Mount Pearl. I wasn’t driving of course, although I’m not much better than that when fully conscious – I’m erratic at the best of times.
But anyway, these beagles were in Mount Pearl, and they belong in part to one of the newest additions to Fotogeeks – Bev. I took the opportunity to test a new fast lens…

And here’s a picture I got of Bev on one of our early morning outings.

Wow, these pictures are old. I took them… hum… seven years ago!

Being from so long ago, I’m not entirely sure that it’s fair for me to use them, but what the hell.. it’s my blog!
They were taken in the Twillingate area during a camping trip which found us in B&B’s more than the tent. I didn’t think I was a Miss Priss.

A few shots of the Lunar Eclipse…

And here’s proof that I’m lazy… I got these shots within ten minutes of each other, got sick of standing around, and went back inside. I actually thought about turning one red is PS – just so I could say that I followed through.

It was unseasonably warm in St. John’s for a few days last week. All-of-a-sudden, the snow that had built up on the patio vanished. Those are a few shots from just before the mild streak.
Melting snow is kinda like a failed relationship really – you look back on it with suspiciously fond memories then quickly remember what a pain in the ass it was.
