Torture ain’t new

Published by Kim under Random Thoughts

It appears that we have reached a consensus of sorts that the church has lost power in recent years. Based on that thought, I found this statue interesting. It was a bit of a find – I was the only one in our little group to spot it, tucked away in some overgrown trees in Witless Bay.

Statue

The angel is apparently about to sever a head and is actually stepping on the captives neck – an eerily life like expression on the mortal’s face. I’m guessing this was a straightforward attempt to intimidate the congregation. I like to point out again that this device of fear is overgrown and abandoned. I wonder if that’s just due to a lack of means on the part of the church, or lack of interest?

-13 in Petty Harbour

Published by Kim under Newfoundland

I’m officially running out of places to explore on the weekly outings, as we’ve covered almost every crevice of the Avalon Peninsula. I’m looking for help… if you’re familiar with where we’ve been and know of any places we’ve missed, please pass them on.

So we headed to Petty Harbour this morning as the sun rose. It takes a little longer down there due to the fact that the community is tucked in the hills. We lingered outside in -13 temperatures as the sun s-l-o-w-l-y crested.

Pretty light in Petty Harbour

It was worth it. Believe it or not, there’s no freaky actions on the go here – that’s the way the sun was hitting. Just a slight bump on saturation.

Creepy Church

Published by Kim under Newfoundland,Random Thoughts

St. Thomas’ Church, Military Road, St. John’s, NL, CanadaI was passing by St. Thomas’ Church on Military Road today and thought it looked particularly creepy. Black seems like such an odd color choice – there must be a story behind that.

Brave painter

Published by Kim under Newfoundland

As I said yesterday, we found ourselves right around Torbay during the sunrise on Sunday morning. Pouch Cove, just a few minutes further on, has a very steep slipway with some colourful Newfoundland murals on the retaining walls. “Slipway” is the perfect term btw… I almost went arse over kettle trying to get this picture.

Rapid stop and shutter

Published by Kim under Newfoundland

I don’t want to offend anyone, but that fire hydrant is pretty much the best thing to photograph in Argentia. Although it played a significant role in history, it’s generally an ugly place. Naturally then, it’s a perfect spot to shoot a beautiful model, so we’re toying with the idea of going back.

Fire Hydrant, sunrise above the clouds, Mike the geek

The sunrise is from the opposite corner of the Avalon Penisulla. As I said before, we originally started that road trip near Torbay. Just as we drove by an area that we’d visited a dozen times in the past, we experienced another one of those “rapid stop and shutter” moments.

The third shot is Mike, one of the geeks. You can actually see two of them there – just look for the black blur in the background.

I’ll try it anyway

Ship Harbour Docks, Newfoundland, CanadaHaving never been there, we headed to Ship Harbour based only on it’s name – you have to admit, it sounds promising.

We got there at exactly the right time, with a boat coming in just as we drove by the dock. The car wasn’t able to make it all the way down so, as the geeks watched, I shuffled down the hill myself. “There’s no shot down there” one of them told the other.

I love it when they say that.

Pouch Cove to Cape St. Mary’s

Published by Kim under Newfoundland

Since the weather seemed iffy, we took a run up just as far as Pouch Cove over the weekend. By the time we got there, the sky had opened up and everything was beautifully lit. After weighing our options based on the good weather before us, we decided to get back to our map and headed to the opposite corner of the Avalon Peninsula.

After visiting an eerily vacant Argentia, we found this great farm around Gooseberry Cove.

The owner told us that the road to Cape St. Mary’s would be impassable with our car, but we had several stories on the state of affairs on that particular stretch of highway, so we continued on toward our goal. He was right – the road was somewhat snow covered as well as somewhat hidden. Our driver wanted to break out the shovel and make a go of it, but he was overruled by the group.

That brings us to 0 for 2 for capes so far this winter. Cape Race = failure. Cape St. Mary’s = failure.

We fit in a road trip yesterday, so I’ll have some stuff from that tomorrow.
