PhotoShootOut I
As I said earlier, our first photo contest went well. The weather didn’t really co-operate, but that hardly seems like a valid complaint considering our position here… way out in the North Atlantic.
Everyone finished up after about an hour or shooting, and we were discussing the techniques used to deal with the weather obstacle. The most common strategy (and perhaps the most commonly abused trick in the digital photographers handbag) was performed in post – just Photoshop the hell out of the thing. The second, and perhaps more clever trick, was to simply go inside to shoot. Granted, that was not an option for some, depending on the lens choice (although reportedly, one of the participants was unaware of any such rule and was “changing lenses like a bastard”).
Anyway, please review the pictures and vote below. Click on the image or caption for a larger version.

I’ve been looking forward to the entries! I read the “rules” and sorry but I wouldn’t consider “Retro Pool Hall” to have a “normal” amount of editing (sorry for the excessive use of quotation marks in that sentence). I’ll go vote now.
I agree 100% with Karen! :)
Mean while, I think I should stick to web / graphic design!!
I agree too (about the rules bit, not the design). Sometimes it takes an impartial voice to set things straight – Thanks Karen.
I think that photographer should be disqualified for switching lenses and over-editing, and he/she should be subject to an automatic humiliation, the details of which to be determined by the winner. That’ll teach him/her! LOL
At what point is the editing effort considered to be “excessive”? Simply asking people to keep editing to a “normal” amount is vague at best. You might as well not have that rule in the first place.
Funny how there are no comments about the other photos, hey?
Funny how those with seriously strong opinions never leave an email address.
Hey Chris, don’t worry about it. When you’re asked to join in a contest, we’ll make sure you know the rules before we start shooting.
Hey Randy – I would think that those voting should know the rules too…
IMO Retro Pool Hall has the most obvious editing, but I wouldn’t consider it beyond the realm of ‘normal’ editing.
I voted before reading the controversy going on here. I guess some things need to be cleared up before round 2!
Well, how did this photo even make it to the contest if it was not a “normally edited” photo? Did everyone post separately, or did someone approve it and put it up?
If it’s such a huge crime then it should never have been put up.
This is a digital world now. What’s the “normal” on editing?
Perhaps the rules should have been to have editing allowed or no editing at all. Now there is a fine line.
Agreed. The rules were clear to the participants (well, each was told), but not entirely online. It was proposed just for fun actually. We’ll have to be a little more adamant about disqualifying someone if they break ‘em. For that matter, if someone is not participating in same spirit as everyone else, they can just vote from multiple computers or lobby for votes, so we’ll have to be more careful all round. Thanks.
Controversy? Nah.
I think only 2 of the 5 pictures were not touched by photoshop. Maybe next time we can all be given the same picture and the contest will be “best photoshop editing”!!
WOW, I turn my back for 2 hours and the place goes up…
First of all, any banter you see between Andreau and Randy is strictly for comedic effect – note the :) and LOL’s. They’re having fun, please don’t take those guys too literally.
The photos were all submitted via email and approved by me (this is my blog fellers) last night, we just like giving a certain someone a hard time for bending the rules.
And those bitching are obviously envious of their fellow competitors… LOL. We all know that we currenty live in a “digital world” and stating what is “normal” is about as easy as debating Security vs. Privacy.
Thanks to all the NEW visitors, and enough of this silliness.
