Shooting for print

Published by Kim under Commercial,Random Thoughts

I’ve been going though an old backup that is being put “offline” and I’ve been noticing how many good shots are tossed aside when you shoot for a magazine. That’s one of the drawbacks of shooting for print publications – you can have a ton of great shots, but the person writing the story often needs a specific photo to illustrate the text. Here are a few examples, each from a different magazine, reaching back from well over a year.

David, Victor, Lorne and Roger

In many ways, I’ve been lucky with this type of work. For example, I’ve never had any type of artistic limitation on what I can and cannot shoot. In fact, in the past, I’ve had wedding clients impose such restrictions more often than publishers. Ah, the weddings – I’ll get into that later.

Print can be difficult for a few other reasons. I’m accustom to quick results. If I get a good shot, I can post it online – never takes more than a few days from shutter to screen. Even when I shoot for a full eight or ten hours, the client has proofs within weeks. When you shoot for printed publications, it can take months before you see how your stuff was used… and perhaps even longer ’till you’re paid.

Worse than all that though is when someone totally bastardizes a photo and then promptly puts your name on it.

Flashback: 1982

Published by Kim under Commercial,Modeling,Newfoundland

Sabrina JenkinsOn the cover of the Herald this week is Sabrina Jenkins, Miss Newfoundland and Labrador 2007.

We shot this a few weeks ago and had a really good time. I’ve worked with Sabrina before – she’s very relaxed and comfortable in front of the camera.

It’s funny though… When I seen the shot, I didn’t even recognise it as one of mine. It’s been cropped and edited heavily. I especially like the artificial “twinkle” they added on her ring. Really nice.

Late night model shoot

Published by Kim under Commercial

I’ve found the perfect modeling subjects – they’re available at any time of day and they never complain.

OK, hold that pose - there it is.

Whatryat?

Published by Kim under Commercial,Grads

So, as I said earlier, I’ve been pretty busy. Although the wedding season has all but clued up, I’ve been doing a good bit of “other stuff”.

One thing was a shoot for enRoute Magazine. They needed a few photos from Home on Water Street for an upcoming story that will be written by Carl Wells.

Home on Water Street

There was a shoot for The Head Room on LeMarchant Road last week. This was a “last minute” thing, but we took the studio with us on location and got some cool stuff for an upcoming hair competition.

There was also a trade show in town called “Rock Solid Technology” that I shot for the organizers of the event.

I’ve got some time now for a few smaller jobs as well. I shot a grad a few weeks back and I think we’ll be doing a few more modeling shoots before the winter hits.

Not so pure

Published by Kim under Commercial,Modeling

Upon being contacted to shoot another cover for Current, I was delighted to hear it would involve the Purity Girls. I was thinking maybe I’ll get some free goodies – ya know, top up my supply of Peanut Butter Kisses, maybe some Jam Jams.

But then the girls showed up and pulled on fish nets instead of hair nets. As it turns out, they are burlesque dancers.

I had tried to Google the name but a whole slew of interesting things popped up – online virginity pledges and strippers all on the same page. It wasn’t till I later added “newfoundland” to my query did I find a video of their performance on YouTube.

The girls were great fun, each with their own characters or personalities – my favorite was Betty Page.

Moshimoshi

Sushi.Sushi. Am I the only one who’s just a little bit afraid of this stuff? I’m accustomed to my fish being smothered in batter and dropped into a vat of boiling animal fat before being served. And instead of laid out on a bed of white rice I usually have it covered under a thick blanket of chips and brown gravy.

Suhsi.I have decided to explore other cultures though and, along with reading, trying the food is perhaps the cheapest way to do that.

Apparently, the word Sushi just means rice together with toppings. In fact, much of the stuff here contains very little raw fish.
Sushi.
I am admittedly quite ignorant when it comes to this food, but here’s something important that I did learn – that green goopy stuff (Wasabi) is Nothing Like Butter.

Not knowing any better, and willing to jump right in, I spread it on my roll (Maki-zushi) and chowed down. Wasabi did something to me that is very difficult to accomplish – it rendered me speechless. It’s that hot.

Sushi.Anyway, it’s all rather tasty. Growing up, I was taught not to play with my food but this stuff is almost too pretty to destroy by eating it.

Stay tuned for further explorations into the Japanese culture. I have a new shoot concept coming this weekend. Maybe then I’ll experiment with a shot glass and some Saki.

Starving for content

Published by Kim under Commercial

Well, if I’ve learned anything in the last few weeks it’s that a photographer needs a lot of patience to do product shots.

What a mess.

In an effort to take what should have been a tantalizing picture of vanilla ice cream drizzled with cherries, I ended up with a red sticky mess that looked like something out of Saw 3.

I guess the problem was the wait while the friggin’ stuff melted. Also, cherries are out of season – I had the poor guy in the produce department drove nuts.

In the end, I had nothing more than goopy red bloblets which looked like they came out of a (*gasp*) fruitcake.

I’m guessing the ingredients I see on the bottle here (Tartrazine? what the #$*%?) are somehow linked to the relative indestructibility of the fruitcake? Ah, the fruitcake, as they often are, passed among acquaintances and co-workers… for generations to come.

I wonder – if I put a tracking device in a fruitcake, how long would it take to circumference the earth?

Anyway the picture wasn’t for anything in particular, so can you guess what happened next? After I failed horribly at making those perfect little scoops from the side of the ice cream container, I broke down – was face deep in it before I had the pictures transferred to the PeeCee. Tartrazine may or may not be best consumed by children, but damn, it is tasty!

It’s so much easier for me to get a genuine expression from a bride then a bowl of ice and chemicals.

Flowers

Published by Kim under Commercial

There’s been a new gallery added to the Kim Goodyear site. It’s comprised of two shoots we’ve done with Aimee Power, Miss Newfoundland and Labrador. I’ve also instructed the web minion to overhaul the rest of the modeling galleries, so some changes will be online in a few days – or else! :)

There’s also another fun sort of modeling shoot arranged for this weekend – we’ll be shooting Janelle again on Sunday. We’ve worked with her a few times before – she always does a great job, so we’ll have some stuff online from that one mid-next week.

I was looking for some nice, artistic shots of flowers for a friend earlier this week. I quickly realized that I wasn’t going to find anything like I had in mind, so I did some myself. Here’s a few samples…

Food!

Published by Kim under Commercial

I’ve had a chance to store and review some old work lately and have come upon some pictures that were forgotten about. Good blog fodder I thought.

I had a chance to try something different a while back. Here’s a few shots that I did for a local chef that will be appearing in an upcoming issue of Saltscapes Magazine.

New Galleries for Corporate and Family pages

Published by Kim under Commercial,Modeling

So we’ve added a few new galleries and session web sites.

The new galleries are in Family and Corporate.

Link: Family Gallery Five, Kim.
Link: Corporate Gallery Four, Ewe Design with Denise and Kim.

The new session web sites are related to the above galleries, and one from a gallery a few days ago.

Link: Carl Ryan Shoot.
Link: Denise Shoot.
Link: Kim Hearn Shoot.

We’ve got an interesting shoot scheduled for tomorrow, sorta theatrical in concept. It’ll be with a new male model, Mike. He’ll be giving Bennan some company on the modeling page – as you can see it’s dominated mainly by beautiful women. :)

This will be among the last round of updates specific to this site for awhile, as the wedding season is about to go into full swing. I’ll still make it known here though when new wedding stuff is added…
