So after several weeks of 90% RDF, the sun broke yesterday. And again today. It’s supposed to be partly sunny tomorrow too – wuhoo. I might just go crazy and pack up the parka and hip wadders!
Anyway, we’re planning another road trip soon. Eventually I’ll have to break down and post some ice burg pictures.

Tonight: Rain mixed with drizzle. Amount 5 to 10 mm. Fog patches. Wind light except northeast 20 km/h along parts of the coast early this evening. Wind becoming southwest 20 km/h overnight. Temperature rising to 8 by morning.
So says the Environment Canada Weather Service. That damn storm cloud icon is really starting to piss me off! Ugh.

Does anyone else remember that big yellow ball that use to show up at dawn on a semi-regular basis?
I’m getting depressed. All this rain and fog is turning me into a hermit.

Anyway I thought those pictures would help jog our memories… and perhaps provide a little artificial warmth.

I visited the Basilica last week, perhaps sub-consciously – in preparation for the coming months.

The PhotoShootOut I polls have just closed and, as previously stated, the best photo has indeed won. As you might have guessed, I took that photo, entitled “No One”. :)

The suddenly (suspiciously?) popular “Stand Pipe” is Andreau’s, placing second.
The infamous “cheater” to which we were all referring was of course Mike (nothing to do with over-PS-ing btw, more to do with lens changing and voting for himself) with “Retro Pool Hall” – third place.
The deeply intellectual “George Street Rejection” is of course Randy’s, and the perfectly positioned “Music and a Muffin” (though technically a bread roll I think) belongs to Bev, with a two way tie in forth.
Ideally illustrating the spirit of our competition, I dug out these photos of Aimee Power handing over her crown to the present reigning queen, Sabrina Jenkins.

So I’ve not been able to get out shooting as much as I’d like lately. Last week’s weather turned the road trip into a quick competition (for which the voting has been going well btw – more on that Monday) and it’s unlikely that we’ll get out for another one next weekend. The minion and I are planning a little trip in the very near future that will allow me to shoot some places that, while I’ve been there before, have never had a chance to photograph.

Those are a few pictures from a fun shoot that didn’t start out as a modeling session per se, but as you can see, sorta turned out that way.

I could never in a million years let anything with antenna come that close to my mouth… to be honest I was a little squeamish when they just fluttered around my head. The guy to the right obviously doesn’t share that same fear.
The pretty factor means very little when you hear that swooshing sound right by your ear and every little tickle feels like something is crawling over your skin. I had a mini outburst with some high pitched squeals – some of the other visitors seemed to enjoy that. After relaxing, this one not-so-little guy perched on my jacket for about ten minutes.
I think the kids did better… I captured some of those little cuties as they explored.

These are a few rejects from our little competition last weekend. Even though we shot for just under an hour, I had a hard time narrowing it down to one.

I fully admit that I ripped off this idea. A post by Karen over at Bitstop alerted me to these undulating beauties a few days back. There are about 52 species of butterflies fluttering around the tiny little greenhouse over at Bowring Park, so it was easy to find a willing subject.

Some photographers actually sit outside for hours to get these shots. Lucky for me the population was so concentrated… and lucky for me I visit Karen’s blog!
Now if I can find a confined area for wrinkly old skippers I’d be set for some really good shots… perhaps I’ll visit my parents in Florida.

As I said earlier, our first photo contest went well. The weather didn’t really co-operate, but that hardly seems like a valid complaint considering our position here… way out in the North Atlantic.
Everyone finished up after about an hour or shooting, and we were discussing the techniques used to deal with the weather obstacle. The most common strategy (and perhaps the most commonly abused trick in the digital photographers handbag) was performed in post – just Photoshop the hell out of the thing. The second, and perhaps more clever trick, was to simply go inside to shoot. Granted, that was not an option for some, depending on the lens choice (although reportedly, one of the participants was unaware of any such rule and was “changing lenses like a bastard”).
Anyway, please review the pictures and vote below. Click on the image or caption for a larger version.
