For those not in Newfoundland, we’re experiencing a bit of weather.
I’ve learned that nothing motivates the masses like fear. Or flurries. So feeling like a true sheep, I stood today in line at the grocery store to buy what could be classified as “in case of power outage” supplies.
Ya know; candles, matches, fruit, whipped cream, vodka. Maybe I should change that to “third date” supplies?
Anyway, the storm has officially hit, and hit quite hard. I’m constantly checking the window, looking in disbelief at how much snow has fallen. I’m hoping it’s a hallucination induced by the delicious combination of low light, gluten and 80 proof alcohol.
So, I’m sitting here amid it all in total appreciation of the beautiful weather we had during the visit to Bell Island this past Saturday.

I don’t want to offend anyone, but that fire hydrant is pretty much the best thing to photograph in Argentia. Although it played a significant role in history, it’s generally an ugly place. Naturally then, it’s a perfect spot to shoot a beautiful model, so we’re toying with the idea of going back.

The sunrise is from the opposite corner of the Avalon Penisulla. As I said before, we originally started that road trip near Torbay. Just as we drove by an area that we’d visited a dozen times in the past, we experienced another one of those “rapid stop and shutter” moments.
The third shot is Mike, one of the geeks. You can actually see two of them there – just look for the black blur in the background.

Just some random images that were kicking around from the last week. The top one is from the Port de Grave Peninsula and the bottom the Goulds.

Some shots from early yesterday morning. As we drove out the Bay de Verde Peninsula we were treated to an extended golden sunrise courtesy of a freaky combination fog,
low lying clouds and surface water vapour.
There was a much smaller group on this excursion, and perhaps that was a good thing. I’m not sure how many people would have stuck with it when the temperature dipped down to -24C (as per the car’s in-dashboard thermometer). We had a well-bundled-up group, each with a good appreciation for the fact that the extreme cold presented us with the surface steam that “made” many of our shots.
Thankfully, the wind was light so, even right on the water, I’d estimate the wind chill didn’t get much below -30C. When there’s very little wind like this, direct sunlight can also make the air seem warmer than the actual temperature.

During our last road trip, upon rounding a inlet just in time to see this, the car slid to an awkward halt and everybody jumped out frantically. I think this was Cape Broyle – the steam on the surface makes it.

Shots from early Sunday morning.

As I’ve done with the last couple of excursions, I’ll post some from that trip over the next few days. You’ll see what I mean about the weather.
